Why Bengali is a hard transcription target

Bengali is the world's sixth-most-spoken language, written in a Brahmic script full of dense conjunct consonants (juktakkhor) and an inherent vowel pronounced "ô". It spans West Bengal and Bangladesh with sharply different regional varieties — all of which challenge English-first tools.

The Bengali–Assamese script is beautiful but demanding for machines. Consonants fuse into conjunct clusters — ক্ষ, জ্ঞ, ন্ত — that don't decompose neatly, and the script's inherent vowel is pronounced "ô", not "a", so spelling and sound diverge. A transcriber reasoning from letters mishandles these. Hearlog transcribes from the audio with Google Gemini, matching sound to the word a Bengali reader would actually write.

Bengali has no grammatical gender, which simplifies some agreement, but its verb system is rich in honorific levels — the "you" you use for an elder, a friend and a child are different, and so are the verb forms. Getting those right matters for a usable transcript, and audio-based transcription preserves the level the speaker chose.

Regional variation is large. Standard Kolkata (Rarhi) Bengali, Dhaka Bengali, and varieties like Sylheti, Chittagonian and Rangpuri differ enough that speakers from different regions notice immediately.
