Marathi shares a script with Hindi — but not much else

Marathi is written in Devanagari like Hindi, but it is a distinct Indo-Aryan language with three grammatical genders, its own vocabulary, extra letters such as ळ, and different treatment of the inherent vowel. Treating Marathi as "Hindi in the same script" produces wrong transcripts.

The shared Devanagari script hides real differences. Marathi keeps grammatical structures Hindi lost, including a neuter gender (so nouns are masculine, feminine or neuter) and a richer set of case and postposition forms. It also uses letters Hindi doesn't emphasise, like ळ (a retroflex "l"), and it retains inherent vowels in places where Hindi deletes them. A model that assumes Hindi rules will mis-gender words and mis-spell endings. Hearlog transcribes Marathi on its own terms, from the audio, using Google Gemini.

Dialect variation is significant. The Pune variety is treated as standard, Mumbai Marathi is faster and more English-mixed, and the Varhadi of Vidarbha and Ahirani of Khandesh differ enough that speakers place each other by region instantly.
