Why Tamil is hard for generic speech-to-text

Tamil is a classical, agglutinative language: grammar attaches as long chains of suffixes to a root, so one spoken word can carry the meaning of a whole English phrase. It is also diglossic — the spoken language differs sharply from the formal written one — which trips up tools trained on text.

In agglutinative Tamil, a root gathers case, number, tense and postposition markers into a single long word. "வீட்டிலிருந்து" means "from the house"; "படித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன்" means "I was reading." A transcriber that expects short, space-separated words the way English works will break these apart in the wrong places. Hearlog is tuned to keep them whole.

Tamil is also strongly diglossic. The formal, literary register (centamil) used in writing and news differs from the colloquial Tamil (koduntamil) people actually speak — different verb endings, different pronouns, different everyday vocabulary. A model trained mostly on written Tamil under-performs on real conversation.
