Fieldwork on women's self-help groups
Meera has recorded eighteen interviews and three focus groups in villages near Nashik, mostly in Marathi with some Hindi. She uploads them into a folder called "SHG study" and asks which themes come up in more than one interview. Loan repayment pressure and travel to the bank appear in eleven, each named. She pulls the exact quotes about repayment, translates them into English for her chapter, and checks them against the audio. (An illustration of how the app works, not a real customer.)
Record → ask → get
1 · Record or upload
Record in the field in the browser — it keeps going if the network drops — or upload the files from your recorder. Free files can be up to 100 minutes each.
2 · Get transcripts
You get the full transcript with speaker labels you can rename, and a detailed summary of each session. Translate into English in one tap; export to Word or PDF for your coding tool.
3 · Ask across interviews
Select the interviews (or a folder) and tap "Common themes" or "Pull exact quotes about ___". Every answer names the interview it came from (Pro).
Example
You ask: “What themes come up in more than one of these interviews?”
Example answer: "1. Pressure to repay on time (Source: Interview 2, 4 Feb; Interview 7, 6 Feb; Focus group 1, 9 Feb). 2. Long travel to the bank branch (Source: Interview 5, 5 Feb; Interview 11, 8 Feb). 3. Husbands deciding how the loan is used (Source: FGD 2, 10 Feb)."
You ask: “Pull exact quotes about loan repayment.”
Example answer: "'If one woman does not pay, all of us are questioned.' (Source: Interview 7, 6 Feb) · 'We sell the goat before the meeting date.' (Source: Focus group 1, 9 Feb)" — translated from Marathi, with the original kept alongside.
You ask: “Summarize all selected on one topic: access to the bank.”
Example answer: A short summary of what every selected interview says about reaching the bank, with each point tagged to its interview.
Examples show what chat does with your own recordings; the answers depend on what your participants said. Treat AI themes as a starting point for your own coding, not a finished analysis.
One question across the whole study
Make a folder for each study, site or round — "SHG study", "Pilot", "Round 2 – Pune" — and ask it anything. hearlog reads every interview in the folder and tells you which one each point came from. The free plan includes 2 folders; Pro gives you as many as you need and lets you ask across them.

Questions
Does it handle regional languages and code-switching?
Yes. hearlog transcribes every major Indian language — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and more — plus 50+ world languages, and keeps mixed speech as it was spoken. You can translate any transcript into English. Powered by Google Gemini.
Is participant data safe?
Recordings and notes are stored encrypted at rest (AES-256, database level) and sent over HTTPS. Each account can open only its own notes. No bot joins your calls — you record or upload yourself. Delete any session when your ethics approval requires it.
Can I take the transcripts into my analysis software?
Export each transcript to Word or PDF and use it in the tool you already work with. Read and correct the transcript first — AI can mishear names, local terms and overlapping voices in focus groups.
Can the themes replace my own coding?
No. Use "Common themes" to get a first view of a large set of interviews and to find the passages quickly. Your analysis, codes and conclusions should come from your own reading of the transcripts.
How much is free?
